Prior to the Bon Secours assignment, Maki served as Interim Chief Operating Officer of Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. With over 3500 employees, a Level I Trauma Center and $450 Million operating budget, Maki made a positive impact during the ten month assignment. Robert Norton, President/CEO of Shands, noted, “While Jerry’s firm specializes in innovative interim leadership, rarely have I seen an interim executive engage an organization with such enthusiasm and camaraderie.” Prior to Shands, Maki served as Interim President of St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Services of the regional facilities were focused to improve the health status of the local communities. Examples include health clinics at schools, recruitment of additional primary care providers, development of a holistic maternal and child health program and the Wyeth-Ayerst HERA Award-winning Mercy Well Child Clinic.

Maki has extensive executive and operations experience through positions as CEO and COO at organizations in the Midwest and Southwest. While in leadership roles at Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, Ohio, he committed the hospital to a philosophy of continuous quality improvement emphasizing associate empowerment and customer relations. Significant measurable improvement was achieved in associate relations, patient satisfaction, and financial performance. The medical center was named an HCIA/Mercer 100 Top Hospital in 1995.
